Every YouTube video has a set of thumbnail images stored on YouTube’s image servers. This tool finds all of them from a single link and lets you save the one you need. It works with normal videos, YouTube Shorts, live streams, embed links and short youtu.be links. You can also paste just the 11-character video ID.
How to download a YouTube thumbnail
- Open the video on YouTube and copy its link from the address bar or the Share button.
- Paste the link into the box above. The thumbnails load straight away.

Which thumbnail sizes are available?
- Full HD (maxresdefault) – 1280 × 720 px. This is the custom thumbnail as the creator uploaded it. Older or low-resolution videos may not have it.
- Standard (sddefault) – 640 × 480 px.
- High quality (hqdefault) – 480 × 360 px. Every video has this size.
- Medium (mqdefault) – 320 × 180 px, in 16:9.
- Small (default) – 120 × 90 px.
If a size does not exist for a video, the tool hides it automatically, so you only see real images.

Thumbnails belong to the creator who made them. Saving one for reference, for your own video or with permission is fine. Re-using someone else’s thumbnail as your own, or on a product, can break copyright law and YouTube’s rules. When in doubt, ask the creator or link to the original video.

Is it legal to download YouTube thumbnails?
Thumbnails are public images, and saving them for personal reference is common. The image still belongs to the creator, so do not re-use it as your own without permission.
Why is the Full HD thumbnail missing?
Some videos, usually older or low-resolution uploads, do not have a 1280×720 thumbnail. Use the SD or HQ version instead.
Does it work with YouTube Shorts?
Yes. Paste the Shorts link, for example youtube.com/shorts/…, and the thumbnails load the same way.
Can I download the video itself?
No. This tool only saves the thumbnail image. Downloading YouTube videos is against YouTube’s terms of service.
What size should a YouTube thumbnail be?
YouTube recommends 1280×720 pixels (16:9), at least 640 pixels wide, as JPG, PNG or GIF under 2 MB.
