Compare two texts online

When a document goes back and forth between writers, editors or clients, it is easy to miss a small change. This text compare tool (also called a diff checker) finds every difference between two versions and highlights them word by word. Added words are shown in green and removed words in red.

How to compare text

  1. Paste the original version in the left box.
  2. Paste the changed version in the right box.
  3. Click Compare. The differences are highlighted below, with a count of additions and removals.
  4. Tick Ignore case if capital letters should not count as changes.

What you can compare

  • Article drafts and edits from a copywriter or AI tool
  • Contract, policy and terms versions
  • Product descriptions before and after an update
  • Website copy, to check what a client changed
  • Code snippets and configuration files

Private and fast

The comparison runs in your browser, so confidential documents are never uploaded. It works best for texts up to a few thousand words. For very large files, compare one section at a time. If you want to count the words in each version, use the word counter. To clean up lists before comparing them, use remove duplicate lines.

How the comparison works

The tool splits both texts into words and spaces, then uses a longest common subsequence algorithm, the same idea behind professional “diff” tools like Git. Words that appear in the same order in both versions are left unmarked. Words only in the original are shown as removed, and words only in the new version are shown as added.

Example

Original: “Our airport taxis are available 24 hours a day.”
Changed: “Our airport transfers are available 24/7 with free waiting.”

The result highlights that “taxis” was replaced by “transfers”, “24 hours a day” was replaced by “24/7”, and “with free waiting” was added.

When to use text compare

  • Editing: see exactly what an editor, client or AI assistant changed in your draft.
  • Legal and HR documents: spot changes between contract or policy versions.
  • SEO: compare an old and new version of a page before and after an update.
  • Translation review: compare two translations of the same text.
  • Code and config: quick checks of short snippets without opening a code editor.

Tips

  • Tick Ignore case if capitalisation changes do not matter.
  • For very long documents, compare one section at a time for faster, clearer results.
  • Paste plain text. Formatting such as bold and links is not compared.

Your texts are compared locally in your browser, so confidential documents stay private. To count the words in each version, use the word counter.

Frequently asked questions

How does text compare work?

It splits both texts into words and finds the longest common sequence. Words only in the original are marked as removed, and words only in the new version are marked as added.

Is my text uploaded to a server?

No. The comparison happens entirely in your browser.

Can I ignore capital letters?

Yes. Tick "Ignore case" before clicking Compare.

Is there a size limit?

Very long texts can be slow in a browser. If a comparison is too large, the tool asks you to compare smaller sections.
